A new year is well underway and if you are a part of the majority, you have made a resolution to make health a top priority in your life. Incorporating healthy choices into your daily routine does not have to be a difficult task on your end, all you need is determination and proper planning to see your goals through. It may seem as though when you are on the quest of creating healthy habits, everything “bad” for you jumps right into your lap. Here are a few ways to incorporate healthy choices into your lifestyle that will soon become a force of habit.
Plan your meals ahead
If you are like most people, your daily routine includes a packed schedule of working, family affairs and if you are fortunate enough to have enough time left over —extra curricular activities. Somewhere in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, you have to make time to eat. And unfortunately this is where most people make the most unhealthy choices for their bodies. Out of convenience, you may find yourself reaching for a snack from the vending machine or a processed frozen dinner. In order to function at its highest ability, it is important to fuel your body with foods that will give you energy and vitality. The only way to ensure that your body is getting the proper nutrients it needs to survive is to plan all of your meals ahead of time.
Choose one day at the beginning of the week, preferably Sunday, to grocery shop for the week ahead. Be sure to fill your cart with plenty of bright, healthy foods such as rich greens and vegetables. Try your best to shop on the perimeter of the store, as in most grocery stores, that is where all the healthy options reside. Stray away from boxed food and frozen dinners. Whole, nutrient rich foods (especially a vegan diet) are your best option.
When you arrive home, prepare all of your food and separate it into containers for each day of the week. Pack your lunch in a bag the night before you go to work and place it where you can see it in the morning on your way out the door. Packing your lunch is the best way to stay on top of your fitness goals and avoid temptation, especially while on the go.
Find a group fitness class
The best way to stay healthy is to actually move your body! Sometimes those that are new to fitness have a hard time holding themselves accountable, so they find a group exercise class to join in order to stay motivated. If you fall into this category, be sure to check your local gyms for the listing of classes they have available. Not only is this a good way to stay on top of your goals, but it offers you the chance to try multiple forms of exercise. On any given day there may be a yoga class, spin class or even a hip hop dance class. Sign yourself up for a membership and begin to enjoy the perks of having unlimited fitness and exercise resources at your fingertips.
And if working out with a group of people doesn’t appeal to you, you can always partner up with some four-legged friends. Take your dog for some regular play time at a local park. Running around and playing catch with him will burn off more calories than you might think. If you don’t have a dog of your own, work a little on the side as a dog walker. It makes for great regular exercise and knowing you have an obligation to your clients will help keep you motivated.
Making the choice to live a healthy lifestyle is by far one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. If you allow room to plan ahead of time you will most definitely set yourself up for success and pretty soon your efforts will turn into a joyous habit. Design a schedule for yourself that is realistic, yet pushes you out of your comfort zone more that usual. Although most fear change, becoming a healthier version of yourself is one change that you will never regret!
